| Irvine,
CA February 5, 2002Destination: Salt Lake City. The Bibles
for America (BfA) mobile distribution crew departed today for a three-week
visit during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. They will pass out over
200,000 brochures offering free Bibles and 4000 New Testament Recovery
Version (RcV) Bibles to the international audience at the Games.
The
BfA motor home, cargo van, and minivan, all outfitted with BfA's
trademark logo, will be conveniently stationed just a few blocks
from the south entrance of Olympic Square.
In
addition to distribution activities at the Olympic Games, the crew
will also visit area college campuses, such as the University of
Utah at Salt Lake City. Dozens of free RcVs were handed out at the
University last year as part of BfA's unprecedented "Word
of Truth USA" cross-country tour.
Up-to-date
coverage of BfA activities at the Olympics will be available on
the Internet. Daily reports, testimonials, and photos from Salt
Lake City can be viewed on the Web at http://www.biblesforamerica.org/olympics.
The
Recovery Version has recently attracted widespread media attention
in the case of a Hong Kong businessman who was detained in May for
bringing over 30,000 copies of the RcV (translated into simplified
Chinese characters) into China. Apart from complaints raised by
international human rights groups, President Bush and several U.S.
Congressmen have also voiced concern over the treatment and fate
of the detainee. Although this Bible is widely available in the
United States and has been freely distributed here by BfA for almost
two years, it is banned by the Chinese government because of its
use by certain Christian groups outlawed by the state.
About
the Recovery Version
BfA's unique gift offer is the New Testament Recovery Version, a
new, accurate translation of the original Greek language featuring
interpretative aids such as over 9,000 extensive footnotes, 13,000
cross-references, maps, charts, and outlines.
"Besides
providing a clear understanding of the divine revelation in the
holy Word, these aids stress spiritual light and life supply-indispensable
to a reader of the Bible who is also a seeker of God," David
Yowell, general manager of BfA, said. "The RcV is for people
who want to understand in a fine way what the Bible is all about."
According
to Yowell, the use of the word "recovery" does not refer
to a person's recovery from alcoholism or other substance abuse;
rather, it refers to the regaining of matters of biblical truth,
Christian experience, and church practice that have been lost.
The
New Testament RcV was first published by Living Stream Ministry
in the 1980s and is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian,
Chinese, and Japanese. The text-only RcV of the entire Bible was
released in 1999, and the study edition will be available later
next year.
Leather-bound
editions of the RcV can be purchased either from the publisher,
Living Stream
Ministry, in Anaheim, CA; on line at www.christianbooks.com,
www.amazon.com,
www.barnesandnoble.com,
or www.borders.com;
or from a nearby Christian bookstore. Since the RcV is a relatively
new translation, some Christian bookstores may need to special order
it through Spring Arbor Distributors.
About
Bibles for America
Bibles for America is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the
spread and understanding of the Word of God. Based in Irvine, CA,
BfA's stated mission is to distribute complimentary copies of the
New Testament RcV to the public. Their goal is to offer, within
10 years, every household in America the opportunity to receive
their free copy. BfA expects to distribute over one million copies
of the RcV.
Since
its inception, BfA has shipped over 70,000 RcVs. Numerous requests
for Bibles from business reply cards, telephone calls, and the Internet
are received daily.
Christian
volunteers in nearly 100 U.S. cities are currently participating
in BfA's community program by distributing brochures and flyers
from house to house. Over 75 college campuses in 60 cities are participating
in BfA's campus program.
BfA
is funded through the generous contributions of individuals and
churches. All financial donations to Bibles for America are tax-deductible
and are used towards the giving away of Bibles and related literature.
