Day 7: Thursday, February 14, 2002 |
|
We
gathered at nine o’clock to pray fervently for the day. We prayed
that by our going out, the Lord would come and announce the gospel
to the poor, proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight
to the blind, and heal the broken-hearted (Luke 4).
Today some local volunteers joined us, so there were fifteen of
us in two teams. We went to two locations we had been to before.
The Lord continues to take care of the weather. It is cold, but
the temperature is not a deterrent. Here are some of our stories:
- We met one
young lady who had received a Recovery Version New Testament at
the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California in January. (Bibles for
America had gone to Pasadena to hand out Bibles and brochures
during the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl championship football
game in January.)
- We met a
young man who said that he didn’t understand the Bible. We showed
him a footnote and he said, “This is the one for me.” So many
people, especially young people, are happy to hear about a Bible
with footnotes that help them to understand.
- A woman and
her daughter who came by read in one of the John 3:16 footnotes
that there is a difference between simply believing facts and
believing into the Lord. Despite the busy setting with a lot of
noise, both of them prayed to receive the Lord Jesus.
We
met three Russian women who are competitors at the Olympics. They
were so happy to receive a New Testament Recovery Version. We
encouraged them by telling them that the Recovery Version is available
in Russian in their home country. They took English versions today.
(It is not common to see participating athletes out and about.
Their housing area is secured from the public.)
- Two women
were walking by and both got a Bible. They told us that yesterday
they had walked by the motor home and we were not there. (The
motor home was parked in the city, but we were all in Logan at
USU.) They told us that today they determined to walk by the motor
home to get their Bibles.
- A father
and son had been searching us out. They came up to the van and
asked for a Bible for each of them. We ended up giving them extra
brochures offering the free Recovery Version New Testament for
their friends. They asked us whether their friends could fill
them out and come get their Bible tomorrow. The father said, “We
have been looking for you guys for two days.” There are thousands
of people here; it is altogether the Lord’s doing that they would
search us out and find us.
- A ninety-year-old
man with his daughter came by. He simply believes what he reads
in the Bible and wanted to sign up for a New Testament Recovery
Version for himself. He said, “I’m a widower, and this would be
good for me to read at night.” We shared with him from John 6,
including the footnotes about the churning of the sea signifying
the troubles of human life, and our needing to invite Him into
the boat of our family life, business, human life. He was so touched
that he began to weep.
- A woman walked
by and we asked her if she wanted a free offer. Thirty seconds
later she came back and said, “I can't turn down anything that’s
free. What is it?” When she found out what we were offering, she
was ecstatic. It turns out she is a believer. She signed up for
a Bible and received one.
- A man passing
by was on the phone. With his free hand, he picked up a brochure
and immediately hung up. He really wanted the Recovery Version
and liked what we were doing in Salt Lake City.
- A young man,
about nineteen or twenty years old, was running down the street
in a hurry. But he stopped at our table and said, “Give me Bible.”
He filled out the request card as quickly as he could and then
ran on. That was as quickest anybody has ever filled out a card!
Today we gave out 134 Recovery Versions. So far, 557 Recovery Versions
have been given out in Salt Lake City. The Word that is going out
in Utah will not return vainly! We don’t know what is happening
behind the scenes and how many lives are being changed.
Rejoicing in His Word,
The "Salt Lake City Tour" Crew
