Report Day 18: Monday, February 25, 2002

Today we thoroughly enjoyed working with the volunteers in Sacramento at Sacramento State University. Many of the arrangements were made at the last minute due to some changes in plan, but we all worked closely together and in harmony. We had an excellent time distributing 196 Bibles in three hours with the help of 15 volunteers.

We set up three tables on campus: two in the Student Quad by the library and one by a bridge over the American River that connects the school and a parking lot.

  • A girl wanted to know the cost of the New Testament Recovery Version. We told her it was free, and the student asked, “What do I do?” She filled out the request card and asked, “Now what?” We detached the request card and handed her the pamphlet portion of the brochure. The student asked, “Now what?” We then handed her a free Bible. She was astonished that the Bible was absolutely free and that she could receive it on the spot!
  • A man who seemed well-versed in the Bible picked up the Recovery Version New Testament and flipped directly to a verse in the Gospel of John. “Oh, you translated ‘power’ as ‘authority.’ I’ll take your Bible,” he said.
  • A student initially refused the gift offer because his father works for the Gideon Bible organization and they have plenty of Bibles at home. We explained that we didn’t want him to give up his Bibles; we just wanted to enhance his study of the Bible with the Recovery Version New Testament, which has over 9,000 footnotes. He signed up for a New Testament.
  • A woman’s car was stolen, as well as her study Bible that was in the car. She was very thankful to receive the Recovery Version New Testament in its place.
  • As we were closing up the motor home, we saw a man nearby who had been locked out of his car and went over to try to help. We asked him whether he had received a free New Testament Recovery Version. He said he hadn’t but that he needed one because he was going through a difficult personal situation. He inquired whether there was anyone in Sacramento who could contact him. The area volunteers told him about some Bible studies he could join locally.
  • We met many Christians today who stopped to thank us for our work of distributing free Bibles.

Late this afternoon, we set out for Fresno, California.

In the oneness of the Spirit,
