Report Day 1: Friday, February 8, 2002

Before we launch our daily log of our experiences in Salt Lake City, a short word of explanation is in order. Because of the positive response to our offer of a free New Testament Recovery Version during our "Word of Truth USA" tour (October-December last year), we decided to seize the opportunity to distribute Recovery Version New Testaments and BfA literature during the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City (February 8-24). We're calling this trip the "Salt Lake City Tour."

Our tour crew this time consists of seven people. Varying numbers of volunteers will join us in Salt Lake City each day, and at one point, there will be about fifty of us.

We left sunny southern California for cold Salt Lake City in our three-vehicle caravan on February 5 and arrived well rested in Salt Lake City yesterday. We spent the day getting ready by setting up our computer connections, working out our lodging arrangements, and looking over the area where we will be distributing Bibles and literature. There are eight areas where we will distribute materials. Of course, we will not use every one each day.

This morning before going out for the first time to meet the public here in Salt Lake City, we gathered for prayer. We enjoyed Joel 3:11, which says, "Hurry and come, / All you surrounding nations, / and be gathered. / There cause Your mighty ones to descend, O Jehovah!" We are anticipating the arrival of people of all nations. We have a strong desire to be the Lord's mighty ones descending for His moving among men! We also prayed for the weather, and although it was very cold, it stopped snowing by the time we left to go downtown. Once we were at our distribution spots, we met several people who were interested. Here are a couple of stories:

  • Four men came to the table to sign up for a free Recovery Version New Testament. We read Col. 2:9 with one of them, which says, "For in Him [Christ] dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily." He said that he agreed with this word and then asked us about John 1:1, which we also read, with the footnotes. All four of these men ended up getting a New Testament today.
  • Our best time today was with a large group of people who approached the motor home. Most of them were young people, and they all were Christians so we had an immediate connection and mutual feeling of kinship. They are from a small town in Nevada and are here to perform in the opening ceremony tonight. Many of them came inside for hot cocoa and coffee, and fellowship. Each of the households among them received one copy of the Recovery Version, so we gave them a total of nine.

Overall, we had a very good first day here in Salt Lake City.

Thankful to be in Salt Lake City,
The "Salt Lake City Tour" Crew
