Monday, December 3, 2001 - This was another day of seeing God move on
the earth. We visited three campuses today: University of Memphis, University
of Mississippi ("Ole Miss"), and Jackson State University in
Jackson, Mississippi. After prayer, we went first to the University of
Memphis.
Here are
some highlights from our time today at the University of Memphis:
We
met a young man from Medellin, Columbia. By reading with him Romans
10:9, 10 and 13, he opened up in prayer to receive the Lord Jesus and
was saved.
"This
is really great. I appreciate what you are doing," a student said.
He came back later, filled out a card, and got a Bible. He was saved
recently, so we read with him John 3:16 and its footnote, to which he
responded, "Yes, that is exactly what happened to me. I’ve received
another life! I’ll treasure this Bible."
For a little
over an hour we passed out BfA literature, giving away 658 small New Testaments
(text only), 30 gift packs, 730 college brochures, and 100 wallet cards.
At twelve
thirty we arrived at the University of Mississippi ("Ole Miss")
in Oxford, Mississippi. Here is one of the highlights of our time there:
A
student asked a volunteer how she could find out about the woman with
the twelve-year issue of blood. She was writing a paper on this subject
and was studying all the women in the Bible. The volunteer suggested
they go to the motor home to look at the pertinent footnotes. In the
motor home, they read all the footnotes from Matthew 9:20; Mark 5:25;
and Luke 8:43, 44. She learned how to use the cross-references to find
what she needed, commenting, "I’ll really use this New Testament.
It’s full of good help."
At "Ole
Miss" we distributed 684 gift packs, 448 wallet cards, and 10 text
only Bibles.
Our third
and final campus for today was Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi.
Our time here was amazing. It was almost unheard of for the students to
reject the New Testament offer. Here are a few highlights:
A
seventy-two year-old pastor who had been ministering for thirty-two
years observed the BfA crew outside the motor home parked next to the
Athletic Center. We gave him an offer, and he continued to observe what
was going on at the motor home. Eventually, he joined us in conversation
and fellowship, joyfully receiving a New Testament. He asked whether
he could give out the BfA toll free telephone number to his congregation.
The head
coach of the Jackson State Jaguar's women's basketball team was elated
to see us and got her Bible. She then proceeded to call each of her
players over to us as they came to the Athletic Center to prepare for
tonight’s game. She told them, "Get over to that bus and get your
free study Bible offer. Each girl obeyed her and came over. The coach
told us they were all Christians who loved the Lord Jesus, and when
they prayed before a game, it was real prayer, not empty recitations.
When a
volunteer asked a girl whether she read the Bible, she replied, "Yes,
a little." The volunteer asked, "And you read the Bible only
a little because . . . ?" The student finished the sentence without
hesitation, "I don’t understand it." At that moment, they
were close enough to see the banner on the motor home. The volunteer
asked her what the banner said, and the girl answered, "A Bible
you can understand," gladly went over to the motor home, and got
a Recovery Version.
We distributed
108 Bibles (31 people requested more contact), 600 gift packs, 220 wallets,
and 20 door hangers.
