Report Day 45: Friday, 11/30/2001

Friday, November 30, 2001 - Day 45, Friday, 11/30/01
This morning before we left Atlanta, we gathered at eight o'clock for prayer, fellowship, and planning. We prayed with the words of Ephesians 1:10: "Unto the economy of the fullness of the times, to head up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth, in Him." Our prayer was for all things to be headed up in Christ today. We then left for the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Here are some highlights of our time at the University of Alabama today:

  • After we offered a man a free study Bible, the man said, "I can't believe it! I was just on my way to go buy a study Bible." He was thrilled to get his Recovery Version New Testament.
  • A homeless man told one BfA volunteer that he didn't know how to pray to the Lord. So the volunteer led this man in prayer to receive the Lord Jesus.
  • One girl was very affected simply by the sight of the BfA team handing out Bibles. She came over to the table and began to cry, saying that she couldn't believe we were there. Last night an older Christian woman spoke with her about the Lord, helping her to turn back to the Lord. There were some things that were bothering her. She needed reassurance of God's love, so we read Revelation 7:17 and 21:4 with her, which comforted her. She saw God's love not only for herself but also for mankind. We bookmarked the verses for her, and she promised to read them again tonight in her new New Testament Recovery Version with footnotes.
  • The editor of the campus newspaper was very interested in getting a New Testament and learning about the soul and spirit. He had only been saved for a year. We read with him 1 Thessalonians 5:23 with its footnote concerning the spirit, soul, and body. He was glad to get a study Bible that would help him understand the Word better.
  • We asked a woman, "Do you have a portion in the Bible that you're interested in?" She replied saying she is a Sunday School teacher and had to speak on James 3 this week. She couldn't understand the first six verses of this chapter at all, so we read that portion in the Recovery Version, especially James 3:6, the verse she was struggling with. After reading the footnote, she understood what she was reading and felt equipped to teach the class.
  • Another student liked the way the Recovery Version New Testament with footnotes is laid out and said, "This makes it clear so that you cannot misinterpret it or make mistakes."
  • One young man heard from his pastor about BfA's "Word of Truth USA" tour across America. He was really excited. He couldn't believe that BfA had come to his own city!

As we were about to leave the campus, (this is becoming normal for us), a woman approached the motor home wanting a children's version of the Bible since she cares for twenty-five children and their parents. We couldn't give her twenty-five Bibles, but we gave her one for herself after she filled out the order form. Then we gave her twenty-five gift packs, each with a small Recovery Version New Testament without footnotes for the children. The parents could call the toll free number to get a Recovery Version with footnotes. She became a BfA supporter in Birmingham, Alabama.

Although we had only four volunteers from the Birmingham area today, we gave away 203 Bibles, many to people who were stopped at traffic lights. We saw here in Alabama what we have been seeing all across America-people are hungry for the Word of God, accurately translated, with clear, helpful footnotes.

Being headed up in Christ,
The "Word of Truth USA" Crew
