Report Day 35: Tuesday, 11/20/2001

Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - At nine o'clock this morning we gathered with volunteers from the Washington D.C. area for prayer. We began by reading John 4:1-26 and praying over verse 14: "But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall by no means thirst forever; but the water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water gushing up into eternal life." The Lord Jesus spoke this word to a thirsty Samaritan woman. Our Lord not only goes out of His way to reach sinners but He only can satisfy the deepest, thirstiest part of man.

We had a rich time of prayer for George Mason University, just outside Washington, D.C., where we planned to go today. We prayed to meet many thirsty Samaritans and the Lord would become in them a spring of water gushing up into eternal life. We also prayed that they in turn would go tell their friends about the free New Testament Recovery Version just as the Samaritan woman told her friends about Jesus.

Around ten thirty we caravanned over to the George Mason University campus, where we had arranged to have a kiosk at the Johnson Center there. Our kiosk was next to the food court--a perfect location for students to see our offer of a free New Testament. Immediately after we set up our distribution table, students came to receive their free Bibles. They were eager to get one after looking over the footnotes and text.

Here are some highlights of our time:

  • Some of the comments the students made were: "Oh yes, I want this!" "This is really sweet," "I am not a Christian, but I want to study the Bible," and "I've been looking for a good Bible."
  • A young man met a volunteer outside the school library and said that he would consider the brochure. But when he spotted another student carrying his new Recovery Version Bible, he said to the volunteer, "That's the Bible you're giving away? Maybe I'll go over to the Johnson Center right now and get one." When that volunteer saw him later holding his new Bible, he was just beaming and said to the volunteer, "Thank you for coming!"
  • A Catholic nun came by and asked to see the Bible. She looked up 1 Corinthians 2:9, "But as it is written, 'Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard and which have not come up in man's heart; things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'" A volunteer read footnote 3 with her : "To realize and participate in the deep and hidden things God has ordained and prepared for us requires us not only to believe in Him but also to love Him. To fear God, to worship God, and to believe in God (that is, to receive God) are all inadequate; to love Him is the indispensable requirement." Upon reading this, her eyes filled with tears of joy.
  • After we told a young woman she could get a free Bible, she became excited and said, "You're giving them away right now? Where? I can get it right now?" When we told her, "Yes, at the Johnson Center," she took off running to get one!

Today was a day filled with the Lord Jesus satisfying many thirsty souls, many Samaritans. Our prayers were answered all day long as one friend told another friend and so on to go get a Bible at the kiosk. We gave away 173 Bibles to real seekers of Jesus and lovers of His Word and nearly 4,000 pieces of BfA literature.

Drinking of Christ as our spring of living water,
