Irvine, CA
- October 17, 2001 - Bibles for America (BfA) launched its first-ever
cross-country road tour today with the mission to distribute free
Bibles and to share the gospel of Christ. With the Bibles for
America logo emblazoned on the motor home in the lead and two
vans loaded with literature in its wake, the caravan will visit
over 40 cities in 28 states from coast to coast. The tour, named
"Word of Truth USA",
will span a period of two months.
"These
days we are all very much aware of the situation in America,"
said David Yowell, general manager of BfA. "Terrorist attacks
have wrought permanent changes in our way of life; we are at war;
our economy is struggling; much uncertainty is facing us. The
current events have produced a very striking openness in people's
hearts to the gospel of Christ and the Word of God. We feel we
owe it to the people of this nation to minister to them spiritually
at this time."
In April 2001,
BfA's motor home toured towns in southern California, Nevada,
and Arizona. But the magnitude and duration of the "Word
of Truth USA" tour are unprecedented in BfA's two-year history.
During this tour, BfA staff members, with the help of local volunteers,
will stop at shopping malls, university campuses, and other public
places to hand out brochures for free Bibles, pocket-size New
Testaments, gospel literature, and gift packs to passersby. They
will also conduct seminars in local Christian homes.
The "Word
of Truth USA" tour began on the West Coast and will travel
through the Midwest with stops planned at major cities such as
Salt Lake City, Denver, Kansas City, Chicago, and Pittsburgh and
Philadelphia. The caravan will travel on to spend 10 days in the
New York City and Boston areas, continue down the East Coast through
Washington, D.C. and Charlotte, and arrive in Jacksonville, FL,
on Thanksgiving Day. From there, the tour will visit cities in
the South and Southwest such as Atlanta, Birmingham, Dallas, Oklahoma
City, Albuquerque, and Phoenix before arriving back in Irvine
in December.
You can follow
the progress of the tour via the Internet. The complete tour route,
daily reports and video clips from the road are available on the
Web at http://www.biblesforamerica.org.
"In this
difficult time in our country's history, we are here to help meet
the deep need of Americans and aid the nation's healing with free
gospel literature and a complimentary copy of the New Testament
Recovery Version, which we feel is the best study Bible available
today," Yowell said.
About the Recovery Version
BfA's unique gift offer is the New Testament Recovery Version
(RcV), a new, accurate translation of the original Greek Bible
featuring interpretative aids such as over 9,000 extensive footnotes,
13,000 cross-references, maps, charts, and outlines.
"Besides
providing a clear understanding of the divine revelation in the
holy Word, these aids stress spiritual light and life supply-indispensible
to a reader of the Bible who is also a seeker of God," Yowell
said. "The RcV is for people who want to understand in a
fine way what the Bible is all about."
According
to Yowell, the use of the word "recovery" does not refer
to a person's recovery from alcoholism or other substance abuse;
rather, it refers to the regaining of matters of biblical truth,
Christian experience, and church practice that have been lost.
The New Testament
RcV was first published by Living Stream Ministry in the 1980s
and is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese,
and Japanese. The text-only RcV of the entire Bible was released
in 1999, and the study edition will be available later next year.
Leather-bound
editions of the RcV can be purchased either from the publisher,
Living Stream Ministry (www.livingstream.com),
in Anaheim, CA; on line at www.amazon.com
or www.barnesandnoble.com;
or from a nearby Christian bookstore. Since the RcV is a relatively
new translation, some Christian bookstores may need to special
order it through Spring Arbor Distributors.
About Bibles
for America
Bibles for America is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the
spread and understanding of the Word of God. Based in Irvine,
CA, BfA's stated mission is to distribute complimentary copies
of the New Testament RcV to the public. Their goal is to offer,
within 10 years, every household in America the opportunity to
receive their free copy. BfA expects to distribute over one million
copies of the RcV.
At present,
BfA has shipped close to 50,000 RcVs in three languages (English,
Spanish, and Chinese). Numerous requests for Bibles from business
reply cards, telephone calls, and the Internet are received daily.
Christian
volunteers in over 80 U.S. cities are currently participating
in BfA's community program by distributing brochures and flyers
from house to house. Over 60 college campuses in 40 cities are
participating in BfA's campus program this fall.
BfA is funded
through the generous contributions of individuals and churches.
All financial donations to Bibles for America are tax-deductible
and will be used towards the giving away of Bibles and related
literature.
