We
happened to see a newspaper headline advertising an Armed Forces
Day celebration at Fort Bliss that was open to the public, so we
went to see if we could get the Bibles for America motor home onto
the base. We were welcomed onto the base and drove to a park area
where most of the attractions were located. We set up a display
table to give away Bibles at the motor home and another display
table a little farther away near other “Open House”
activities.
The first person to approach us said that she thought she knew
this version of the Bible. After a careful look, she said that she
had been raised as a child in Houston reading the Recovery Version.
She asked for a phone number of someone in El Paso with whom she
could fellowship and read the Recovery Version.
The
commanding general of the post came by and greeted everyone at the
display table. We showed him the Recovery Version and how to use
its various features. He and his driver both received Recovery Versions
and he said, “We are really happy you came today!”
Two motor home crew members took a cart full of Bibles and walked
around the parade field where a number of military vehicles were
on display. They stopped occasionally and gave Bibles and gift offer
brochures to soldiers walking by. Most of the soldiers accepted
the Bibles and thanked us. A female soldier said that she had just
spent nearly thirty dollars to buy a Bible, so she was happy to
receive a free one from us. We handed out more than seventy Bibles
from our small cart.
